Ross in 1838

Ross stands beautifully on a red sandstone cliff on the banks of the river Wye, 14 miles below Hereford, in the hundred of Greytree, the distance from Gloucester is 17 miles, from London 120 ; the market-day is Thursday.

John Kyrle was great local benefactor, responsible for such works as The Prospect public gardens, the elm trees in the churchyard, the supply of water, and repairs to the church and spire.
