Emsworth, Hayling Island and Titchfield in 1838

Emsworth, a hamlet of the parish of Warblington, at the head of a channel which forms a branch of Chichester harbour, is a place of some trade as a port ; ship-building and rope-making are carried on.

Hayling Island is becoming a place of considerable resort for bathers, and numerous new buildings have been recently erected.

Titchfield, about two miles from Fareham, on the road to Southampton, is a place of some trade : it is on a small river, by which small vessels get up to the town. A customary market is held.

Old Towns is a resource of 19th century English historical data, extracted and digitized from articles written between 1833 and 1848 which were originally published in 'The Penny Magazine' by The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
